How To Take Care of Your Smile On Vacation

It is common to feel extremely lazy while on vacation. This fun and relaxing time should come with zero consequences to behavior that otherwise would be very damaging in the “real world”. Unfortunately, vacation is still the “real world” and you must continue to take care of yourself regardless of where you are and what you are doing. Here are some tips to staying on track with your dental care/ oral hygiene while you’re on vacation.

Pack What You Need
Before going on vacation, be sure that you pack what you need. After that be sure that you check that you’ve packed everything, then double check, then triple check. When packing for a vacation, it is really easy to forget the essentials of your oral hygiene routine due to the rush of excitement. When packing, also be sure to keep things hygienic by packing your toothbrush in a well ventilated container to keep it safe, separate, and clean.

Keep a Routine
When it comes to oral hygiene, just like with your normal, non-vacation oral hygiene, you should stick to a routine. This means brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and using mouthwash. To make this easier, stick to a certain time or schedule. This could look like brushing immediately after breakfast or at exactly 9am every morning.

Watch What You Eat
Along with forgetting about your routine, it is also forget to watch your diet while on vacation. In the spirit of indulgence, it is common to eat more sugar while on vacation which can be very bad for your teeth. Be sure to watch what you eat, pack healthy snacks, and use straws (preferably reusable ones) to keep sugary substances away from teeth. Drinking water after eating/ drinking sugar is also helpful for washing away sugar that would otherwise remain on the teeth.

Get a Checkup Before You Go
Nobody wants to deal with a tooth infection, cavity, or other dental unpleasantness while on vacation. To make sure that your trip is comfortable, get a dental check up and cleaning before you go.

Taking care of your teeth while on vacation doesn’t have to be a hassle. Just think of all the good you are doing for the health of your mouth and that alone will motivate you to keep up with all of your usual habits.
