Is Invisalign More Effective Than Braces?
One of the first choices you and your dentist will have to make when you want to straighten your (or your child’s) teeth is whether to choose traditional dental braces or Invisalign. So we are often asked – is one more effective than the other?
The answer however is not a simple yes or no. Both Invisalign and dental braces are effective for straightening teeth but one may be preferable over the other depending on your circumstances.
Dental Braces vs. Invisalign – How Do They Work?
Invisalign braces are computer generated trays that should be worn 24 hours a day (except when eating or brushing) and should be changed every two weeks. The main advantage of Invisalign is that they are extremely discreet (practically invisible) and they do not affect your speech. They also require fewer trips to the dentist for adjustments. Furthermore, it will be easier to clean your teeth with invisalign since you can simply remove the trays before brushing or flossing and then reinsert them when you are finished.
Dental braces traditionally consist of metal brackets that are affixed to a wire although today there are non-metal options available as well. They are affixed to the patient’s teeth and must be put in by a trained dentist or orthodontist. Regular dental visits for adjustments will be required. Braces will correct certain problems such as large gaps between teeth more quickly than Invisalign.
Dental Braces vs. Insvisalgin – Which is Better?
There are definitely cases were dental braces are the preferred choice over Invisalign. This includes complex cases as well as when the patient is a child whose jaw and teeth are still developing. Dental braces may also be the better choice for someone who can be a bit absent minded and who may forget to change or wear their Invisalgn trays.
That being said, Invisalign is often chosen as the more aesthetically pleasing option. Since Invisalign trays are difficult to see and do not affect the speech of the wearer, they are a good choice for adults and even responsible teenagers wishing to correct non-complex issues with their teeth.
Which option should you choose?
As mentioned, there are some cases in which your dentist will recommend dental braces, but if your case is not complex, you will have the option.
