So you’ve finally decided to straighten your teeth. And wanting to be discreet about it, you have chosen to get Invisalign braces! Congratulations, you are on your way to a healthier-looking, straighter smile. But although Invisalign will bring you straighter teeth, it will also bring you some challenges that you may not have anticipated. This blog is an attempt to give you a picture of what it is like to live with Invisalign braces.
You need to wear them 20-22 hours per day.
This sounds easy, but it can actually be a real challenge. For your aligners to do their job, you need to wear them as much as possible. But they can’t be worn while eating or brushing your teeth. Depending on how many meals you eat or how often you snack, keeping your aligners in for the recommended 20-22 hours can be difficult. And if you forget to put them back in after a meal, it increases your chances of losing them. A good habit to get into if you wear Invisalign is to set the timer on your phone each time you eat so that an alarm will remind you to put them back in.
You will need to clean your teeth EVERY time you eat or drink.
You probably understand the importance of regular brushing and flossing, but if you wear Invisalign, it becomes even more critical. That’s because, if you put your aligners back in after you eat without brushing the aligners will hold any food particles or sugar against your teeth and dramatically increase your chances of getting cavities. The last thing you want is a bunch of holes in your newly straightened teeth!
Of course, if brushing and flossing is a necessity every time you eat, you could find this takes up a pretty big chunk of your day – especially if you eat many small meals throughout the day or if you like to snack a lot.
How to make life with Invisalign easier.
Invisalign braces are a great way to discreetly straighten your teeth, but they can cause some inconveniences if you are not prepared. A few things you might want to consider if you are getting Invisalign:
- Adjust your eating habits – possibly cut out a meal or a snack, so you can wear your aligners longer.
- Keep a travel toothbrush, floss and toothpaste with you at all times – so when you do eat, you’ll be able to clean your teeth right away.
- Make water your beverage of choice. Whenever you drink soda or juice while you have Invisalign, you will need to brush right away. To reduce the time you need to spend brushing, drink water instead.
